When you're short of breath, it's hard or uncomfortable for you to take in the oxygen your body needs. You may feel as if you're not getting enough air. Sometimes mild breathing problems are from a stuffy nose or strenuous exercise.
If you suddenly find it hard to breathe but you don’t have an underlying condition, stay calm and try to find the source of the problem. Situations that trigger acute breathing difficulty can provide an important clue to the underlying cause. Allergies (such as to mold, dander, or pollen) can cause shortness of breath, as can dust or pollutants in the environment, such as carbon-monoxide.
Being at a high elevation can also cause shortness of breath. Altitudes above 4,000 feet can lower oxygen in your blood, which can lead to light-headedness and nausea as well.
Rarely, medications such as beta-blockers or aspirin may cause breathlessness if you have asthma.
Some people have difficulty breathing while exercising or exerting themselves physically, such as during sex, so it might help to slow down or stop moving altogether, although you can also have shortness of breath at rest or while lying flat.
If you are experiencing shortness of breath, try to relax your muscles, don’t panic, and consider the causes. You may have a problem with the airways leading to the lungs, including blockage of the air passages in your nose, mouth, or throat, or you may be choking on something stuck in the airways. If your breathing difficulty continues to worsen, go to the emergency room immediately.
Shortness of breath has many different causes, and the treatment of shortness of breath is specific for each cause. There are, however, some first aid steps you can use to treat shortness of breath, at least until the ambulance arrives or you are able to get the victim to a hospital.
For patients with shortness of breath, try letting the patient sit, stand or lie down in whatever position makes him or her comfortable. Don't force a position on the patient. Let the patient rest. No need for walking or any sort of exertion. Let the patient use his or her oxygen or inhaler--encourage it, even.
